We aim to maximise your potential, rehabilitate where possible and slow down physical deterioration, whilst focusing on your strengths and considering your priorities

Why should you see a physiotherapist?

If your condition causes you to have any physical symptoms, we highly recommend that you book an assessment with one of our physiotherapists. This will help us gain a baseline understanding of your physical status, and this will enable us to monitor any changes over time. our physiotherapists can help with a range of symptoms such as:

  • Pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Spasticity and muscle stiffness
  • Joint stiffness (including loss of movement range)
  • Loss of coordination
  • Balance problems
  • Walking problems
  • Posture and positioning
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Breathing problems

At your initial assessment our physiotherapist will thoroughly discuss your condition and/or symptoms including your health history and your lifestyle. This will help both you and our physiotherapist explore what matters to you and your goals. They will carry out a physical assessment that is appropriate to your specific and induvial needs.

The physiotherapist will discuss with you any findings from the assessment, options for treatment and agree a treatment plan with you. Often, they may recommend some exercises to do at home, and may also suggest some hands-on therapeutic treatment.

Other specialist treatments we offer include:

Acupuncture. This is the insertion of very fine needles into specified acupuncture points throughout the body. The principles of acupuncture are based in Traditional Chinese Medicine theories which influence the balance of our physical energy (Qi). In more modern times, scientific research has shown acupuncture to have specific effects on some of our physiological functions, including those that control perception of pain, immune response, and release of endorphins.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). This equipment provides stimulation of weak or inactive muscles using electrical impulses. This is commonly used for management of footdrop (the occurrence of tripping or catching of the foot due to weak or inactive shin muscles to lift the foot when walking) where a specially designed device can be set up for you to help you walk more safely.

We also provide:

Kinesio-taping. The application of specially designed, stretchy tape has been shown to improve blood flow to the area, reduce pain, alleviate swelling and potentially improve muscle activity. It is used widely within the field of sport to improve performance and prevent injury.

Measurement for Compression Garments. The application of compression to our muscles can make them work better and fatigue less, contributing to better posture and more efficient movement. In the form of vests, sleeves, socks and even bodysuits, lycra garments can be a useful way to help manage postural issues, muscle spasms and sensation problems. Off the shelf versions are available as well as custom made garments for which we can measure and order.

Equipment Assessments. We can review and advise on any equipment that you might use for making life easier. This includes walking aids, transfer equipment and wheelchairs.
