Our Physiotherapy & Wellbeing Team are here to help you..

We offer timely access to high quality assessment and treatment to support you with symptom management and exploring your physical potential.

Our small team of neuro-physiotherapists will help you find strategies to suit your individual needs to help manage your condition, symptoms and your daily life. We aim to always provide straightforward answers and expert support with sensitivity, compassion, and care.

We listen..

You know your body better than anyone. To help you get the most from your body, we rely on the information you give us.  Gillian Robinson, Izabela Atemborska and Anna White, our specialist neuro-physiotherapists,  will work with you to identify your priorities for your physical wellbeing.

Physio talking to client

We assess..

Once we’ve got to know you a little better, we’ll assess your physical wellbeing. We might:

    • Check your muscle strength
    • Feel your joints (neck, back, shoulder, knee etc)
    • Test your balance
    • Check for spasticity
    • Look at your walking
    • Measure your range of movement
    • Check your breathing pattern
    • Look at your posture & positioning (including a wheelchair assessment if you use one)

We advise..

Based on the assessment, we’ll discuss our findings with you and devise a plan.

We’ll help you find solutions to your concerns where possible and explore strategies for self-management for ongoing symptoms.

We might recommend some therapeutic intervention with us at Compass, and we often suggest some exercises to help manage or relieve symptoms that you can do at home.

We might also encourage you to join one of our online or face-to-face classes.

We treat..

There are lots of ways we might treat your symptoms with hands on therapy or using some of they equipment we have at the centre. This is always fully discussed and specific to your needs.

We have time..

At Compass, we never discharge you from our service. Once you register with us, you’ll have open access to our physiotherapy & wellbeing team, subject to availability. We aim to see all new clients within 2 weeks of registration.

The Centre is a hub for meeting and encouraging each other, for moral support – it really helps keep me positive. It provides what I need to manage my MS. The physiotherapy, exercise classes and complementary therapies have been invaluable to me. It’s a great comfort to know Compass is there for me. I hope it always will be for those who need it. I know I can go there whenever I need to. John, (living with MS)

Classes help to keep my body more supple and keeps my body active. It helps to promote feelings of wellbeing and gives a sense of community. Paul

I have found the physiotherapy services at Compass to be a huge support throughout my journey with MS. Jill

Thank you for all your help and all the smiles on my route to recovery. I always come away from the centre with a smile. AC

Thank you so much for your time and creating such a welcoming environment. LB

At Compass, I no longer feel as alone with the disease as I do sitting at home. There are moments of sweet camaraderie, ‘us’ against the disease, you can forget about being different, and can simply giggle over the often
embarrassing experiences of having MS. As soon as I set
lopsided foot in the centre, I wondered why I hadn’t come sooner. The reality of the Centre is that it’s empowered me to take more control over my illness, now I go for
regular physio and gentle exercise classes. The

laughter and kindness are highlights of my week. Helen

Some of our specialist treatments:

Acupuncture

The insertion of very fine needles into specific points of the body. The principles of acupuncture are based in Traditional Chinese Medicine theories which influence the balance of our physical energy (Qi). In more modern times, scientific research has shown acupuncture to have specific effects on some of our physiological functions, including those that control perception of pain, immune response, and release of endorphins.

Wellbeing Support Service

Jonny Marc-Gillam is our Wellbeing support officer as well as an experienced rehabilitation therapist. He can offer you support in finding and accessing the right services for you. For others, it is help in navigating the often confusing community care, benefits and financial support available to them. Our wellbeing support service aims to look at each individual holistically and help them find how to plan their own self-management strategies, lifestyle choices, social activities and support networks.
